2015 Presentation Day

South Sydney High School will be celebrating the achievements of year 7 to 11 on Tuesday 15th December 2015 at 10am at our annual Presentation Day Ceremony. Award winners will receive a certificate or medal acknowledging their achievements and will be presented to the community on stage in the school hall. Applications for student travel 2016

From 2 November 2015, a new online SSTS application process is being introduced for schools within the Opal network, coinciding with the introduction of the School Opal card. Schools outside the Opal network should continue to process the existing blue SSTS application forms and send them to the appropriate transport operators. Most parents, guardians and students won't need to apply for a school travel pass for 2016 if they have already been given a school student travel pass for the current year. Good Men Good Relationships- Manhood Day

On Thursday the 20th November all Year 10 boys were invited to participate in a cutting edge program called "Good Men Good Relationships-Manhood Day". It was day where together with male mentors from the corporate world, actors, police officers, athletes and ex teachers, our boys discussed in the safety of our school, issues to do with how they felt about entering manhood. White Ribbon Day 2016

The White ribbon Campaign aims to end violence against women and girls, through public education and culture change. On 25th November all males are being asked to swear that they will ‘NEVER COMMIT, CONDONE OR REMAIN SILENT ABOUT VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN'. On Tuesday the 10th November 10 girls were selected to participate in the "Dress for Success Program" at Marrickville as a part of the Beacon and Opportunity program . We were privileged to participate in a program that not only showed us what was appropriate professional make-up, deportment and attire, but we were styled and fussed over, and then given outfits and shoes for the purpose of preparing us for when we go for job interviews. 2016 school funding allocations

All NSW public schools are currently being advised of their 2016 Resource Allocation Model (RAM) funding. RAM distributes funding based on individual needs of students and schools, and gives schools greater flexibility to make financial decisions. The way schools use their RAM funding will vary based on local needs. Some support will be for the entire school, and some will be for particular groups of students or individual students. At South Sydney High School we have successful project based learning experiences including Ms Blair's ‘Big Picture Learning' course which was last offered in 2014 and SSCIM (South Sydney's Club for Intelligent Minds): a weekly club where students can gather at lunch time on a Monday to pursue areas of aptitude and interests. We have been lucky to have the Souths Cares Homework Club at our school on Tuesday afternoons during Terms 2 and 3 this year. Year 8 Science Violet and 9 Science Blue attended the Science Festival at the Australian Museum with Ms Mifsud and Mr Spencer as part of National Science Week celebrations. South Sydney High School was well represented at The Great Engineering Challenge hosted by UNSW and Engineers Australia on Wednesday 5th August. On the day students were given discreet problems that were to be solved in a given time period and then their solutions were scrutinised and tested in front of the 30 other schools participating in the challenge. Formula 1 Racing Workshop

Year 9 IT Engineering students enjoyed a workshop presented by the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) on Thursday week 3, Term 3. This class is designing their own Formula 1 Model Cars using 3D computer aided drawing. The winning designs will be put forward by their team members and these are to be milled out using state of the art CAD CAM Technology. On Friday 5 th June, 5 South Sydney High School students participated in public speaking at Parliament House. Brooke Copeland, Ryan Daniels, Harrison McKimm, Jessica Newport and Jayden Slater participated in impromptu speeches and training. They represented the school well and each student had a turn speaking. Next term, the students will go back to present an impromptu and prepared speech at Parliament House in front of an audience. Congratulations go to Easton in year 7 who attended SSCIM club this term to prepare for competing in the City of Sydney Eisteddfod in Drama. Easton won first prize in this prestigious competition. The 2015 HSC Study Guide has been released today. The 2015 HSC Study Guide, produced by the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) and BOSTES. The guide has practical information about the HSC and timely advice for students on how to succeed in the HSC exams. Every year there is an exhibition of works created in schools across the Sydney Region which displays artworks created in class rooms based on the study of Aboriginal Artwork. Last year our school had a Year 7 group work selected to be exhibited. The boys involved in creating this artwork were presented with certificates on assembly last week. Congratulations to the South Sydney High School Year 9/10 Debating Team who were victorious in their second round clash of the Premier's Debating Challenge against Newtown High School of the Performing Arts. As part of National Reconciliation Week, the Indigenous Veterens Commemoration Ceremony to commemorate the service and sacrifice of indigenous veterans was held on Friday 29th May 2015. Duke of Edinburgh Award 2015

Duke of Edinburgh Award Training Walk

Our Duke of Edinburgh training walk was completed in the Royal National Park on May 19-22nd. 2 x Bronze groups, a Silver group and a Gold group navigated and hiked for 3 or 4 days carrying all their equipment, tents, food etc in their back packs. It was a challenging walk and the students did a fantastic job completing it in good spirits. This expedition was a training walk which will lead to a qualifying expedition later in the year. On Friday 1st May South Sydney High School hosted the Plain English Speaking competition. Nine schools participated, with a total of seventeen speakers. Each contestant spoke on a prepared topic for 8 minutes, and completed a three minute impromptu. Kylie Wessels and Jack Stout from year 11 represented South Sydney, and spoke well. The TAS Faculty organised a great excursion for the Year 9 IT Engineering class to go and get up close to the spectacular Harbour Bridge. Students enjoyed a guided tour of the Pylon Lookout on the southern side of the bridge and had a great vantage point over the structure and the harbour itself. There was a lot of excitement in our school's drama room on Monday 30 March as droves of students arrived to enjoy this year's year 11 Drama play, ‘Cyberbile' by Allana Valentine. WiseTech Global Excursion

Year 10 and 11 students attended an excursion to WiseTech Global which was held on the 19th March 2015. This opportunity was a brilliant and interesting experience which offered the students a wide knowledge of the company and what they do. Congratulations to our wonderful chess players. The South Sydney Chess team came overall third at the recent inter-school competition held at the French School on Friday 6 March. Matthew Smith (Year 11) has been a Technology and Applied Studies (TAS) student since he came to South Sydney High School in Year 7. He has excelled in the Industrial Arts Department where he has honed skills in the Industrial Technology Timber area. Matthew has found a true passion and made a private purchase of his own lathe used most commonly for woodturning. Year 11 and 12 Engineering Studies students visited the Qantas Jetbase at the International Airport on Wednesday 25thFebruary. Aeronautical engineering is a major component of the HSC course and our dedicated tour guide Mr Daniel Gregoire from Qantas was exceptional in his presentation of the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747 aircraft which students were allowed to board and interact with. New Giant Chess Board at SSHS

There is a lot of excitement about the giant chess set that the P&C provided funding for at the end of last year. It has now been completed and is already in action! Mr Askounis, South Sydney's Head of Mathematics, has been generously giving up his time at weekends and after school to get the chess board painted in the courtyard of F Block, with some help from his SSCIM chess friends in year 9. SSHS School Photo day will be held on Monday 23rd February. Students have each been given an envelope which they will need to return directly to the photographer on the day. Only one student per envelope All students must fill in sections 1 and 3 Students paying by cash or cheque must enclose the correct amount in the envelope and fill in section 2. Opportunities at SSHS you should know about!

The Homework Club and the Breakfast Club are 2 of the many opportunites available for students at SSHS. HOMEWORK CLUB SSHS has a Homework Club that runs every Tuesday afternoon. This club is available to all students. It runs from 2.35 – 4.00 pm and is supervised by teachers and teachers' aides. This is to allow students to get assistance for homework and assignments.
