2018 Resource Allocation Model funding

In October 2017, all NSW public schools will receive a 2018 Planned School Budget Allocation Report. The report will assist with the management of the total budget delivered to schools through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM). The Resource Allocation Model (RAM) methodology distributes funding based on the individual needs of students and schools. This gives schools greater flexibility to make local decisions. R U OK? Day

On Thursday the 14th September, the SRC held our annual R U OK? Day. R U OK? Day is a day to raise awareness about how to prevent anxiety, depression and suicide, by asking someone if they are okay. This hopes to spark life-changing conversations between people who may or may not know each other well, or with someone who might be able to help cheer another person up and smile for the day. This year the SRC baked and sold over 330 cupcakes to raise money for beyond blue. This is an organisation to help with further research in mental health... Read more

Stage 4 Project-Based Learning Presentations

On the 13th and 14th of September, students, parents and staff members gathered in our staff common room to celebrate the project-based learning that our Stage 4 students have been engaged in. These projects offered students an opportunity to embrace the challenge of investigating a self-selected topic. Students then had to devise a driving question that would direct their research and the products they would eventually create. Sydney Observatory Excursion

Year 11 Physics Excursion to Sydney Observatory On Thursday 31st August, the year 11 Physics class, along with some other keen students, travelled to the Sydney Observatory at The Rocks for an evening tour of the facilities. The 24 dedicated students travelled after school in their own time for a syllabus driven event, including the use of the new $250,000 telescope to look at the Moon, Jupiter and Saturn. The Science faculty organised a great week of Science activities as a part of National Science Week. We would like to thank all the students and teachers for getting involved! We have been studying the "Caring for the Newborn" unit as part of the Child Studies syllabus. As part of the course we spent some time learning how to bathe and clothe a new born baby. Success in the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) NSW Crystal Growing Competition! We are very pleased to announce some excellent results in this year's Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) NSW Crystal Growing Competition. The aim of the competition is to grow the best possible crystal in six weeks and our students were competing against students from 26 other schools (including non-government schools). Exciting Projects in Tech Mandatory

Year 8 B and G have just completed their electronics unit. This involved designing a plaque with a "call to action" sign on it. It incorporates basic electronics; including soldering wires onto an electric circuit that was made by the students and connecting a switch and battery terminal to make LED lights go on and off. Drama Lovers Head to Eternity

Students who have decided to study year 9 elective drama in 2018 joined with members of South Sydney's Drama Ensemble on Wednesday 16th August to attend a production of ‘Kindertransport' by Diane Samuels at the Eternity Theatre in Darlinghurst. Following the performance of this wonderful show and the discussion afterwards, we took a look at the ‘Walking in Wiesbaden' by Ella Dreyfus exhibition at the theatre. Year 11 Crossroads and PDHPE Camp

On Monday 7th August, year 11 boarded the bus to Morisset to attend the 3 day camp. The trip went very quickly and we were there to enjoy three days of fun and activities. The PDHPE students spent an extra night camping in tents. While they were there, the students attended two crossroad lectures, participated in the flying fox, high ropes, leap of faith, the giant swing, canoeing and mud world. NDIS continues its roll out across NSW

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) started in NSW in July 2016, rolling out across half of the state. The rollout for the rest of NSW started on 1 July 2017 and the NDIS will be fully rolled out by mid 2018. The NSW government is writing to the families of children and young people with disability who currently receive disability supports in the rollout areas to advise how and when they will enter the NDIS. Year 10 Mock Interview Program

On the 8th of August Year 10 Students had the opportunity to meet with businessmen and women to conduct a job interview under all the same conditions as a real interview. The interviewers, ranging from Police Officers and Stockbrokers to HR specialists and Journalists, asked plenty of questions about the specific job students were applying for. By the end of the interview, they gave helpful feedback about how students conducted themselves during the interview and explained things they did well and things they can improve on. NSW schools will participate in the NAPLAN Online School Readiness Test from 14 August to 22 September. There is a lot of information for schools, students and parents on the NAPLAN Online transition website. The school readiness test is a ‘practice run' for schools to assess their technology as we prepare to transition to NAPLAN Online. T. Rowe Price Industry Visit

Twenty four Year 10 students on the 30th of May, 2017, visited this global investment company. Students were given insight into several possible career pathways. The employees at T. Rowe Price have very diverse career pathways. One employee was a former 'Home and Away' actor, another was an AFL player. Other employees were a Coca Cola merchandiser, a motor mechanic and various university graduates. This was a useful experience for our students, especially when it comes to selecting senior subjects. Year 11 Biology students were visited by Dr Enhua Lee, who is an SoS (Saving our Species) Project Officer for the NSW state government. She gave an inspiring and interesting presentation about working as an Ecologist. She also explained strategies that are used in the field to study animals like snakes, lizards, koalas and bats. Empowering Young Women

On Thursday the 24th March- 26 yr 10 girls were taken to investment company T.Rowe Price to participate in our annual Empowering Women Program. Thanks to our friends at United Way we were able to connect with T.Rowe Price who funded this program by providing the venue- their boardroom, mentors, and lunch for our students. The day was fantastic as students workshopped important issues pertaining to women in the workplace. These issues included resilience, strategies for success, gender inequality and very interestingly emotional intelligence. ... Read more


Swimming Champions- Girls

South Sydney High School are very proud of our swimmers that competed at the recent Zone Swimming Carnival. Our school was awarded the ' Swimming Champion School- Girls'. This is a Zone Sport Award presented to the school that earns the most points per student enrolled at the school at the Zone Swimming Carnival. It acknowledges the hard work and enthusiasm of students and their willingness to 'have a go'. Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge

Ten students from Years 7, 8 and 9 participated in the Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge on Thursday 16th March. Some students opted to complete the challenge in pairs whilst others worked individually. Bebras is aligned with and supports the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies. The challenge introduces many of the learning areas in the new digital technologies curriculum with a particular focus on computational thinking. On the 23rd of February, the new 2017 Beacon student ambassadors participated in their leadership training at school. Introducing Healthy School Canteens

The introduction of the revised Healthy School Canteen Strategy increases the availability of healthy food and drink options in school canteens to make the healthy choice, the easy choice. It replaces the Fresh Tastes@School Strategy in NSW schools that was commonly known as the traffic light system. The revised strategy is consistent with the 2013 Australian Dietary Guidelines and classifies food and drinks as either Everyday or Occasional. Sugary drinks will continue not to be sold. Jacqueline Loh, Year 12 graduate from 2016, has been successful in gaining a placement as an intern in a brand new creative apprenticeship program- 'The Forge' run by Clemenger BBDO Sydney and I- Manifest. This program is designed to provide a foot in the door for young creative talent. Jacqueline graduated from South Sydney High at the end of 2016 and enjoys telling stories through illustration and writing.
